Waywords and Meansigins is seeking an intern to assist with research related to Irish author James Joyce.
The intern’s work will be primarily dedicated to researching Joyce’s legacy in the arts, specifically music. The intern will help collect and present data for The History of James Joyce Music — Adaptations, Interpretations and Inspirations, a bibliographical chronology of musical works inspired by Joyce. Detailing Joyce’s legacy in genres as diverse as jazz and minimalism to underground folk and metal, this is the most comprehensive bibliography available on the topic.
The selected intern will gain firsthand experience working on an innovative digital research, relevant in a variety of fields including English literature, Irish studies, musicology, and digital humanities. The intern will also learn about effective ways to present digital information, including the basics of SEO (search engine optimization). Additional training in social media and online project management is available, if desired. Internship may also include training in WordPress.
The commitment of the internship is flexible, but will last a minimum of three months with a monthly commitment of 5-10 hours. This unpaid internship is remote, applicants from anywhere in the world are encouraged to apply. We are happy to work with your university or other organizations to fulfill internship or community service requirements. Research and writing will be conducted in English.
The History of James Joyce Music contains more than 250 entries, with most entries linking to freely hosted audio and video recordings. Our research operates under a free content ethos; applicants who value free content, Creative Commons, and open source work are strongly encouraged to apply.
The intern may occasionally assist with research related to “Joyce Smithy: A Curated Review of James Joyce in Visual Art, Music, and Performance,” an annual column published in the James Joyce Quarterly.
The internship will be overseen by Derek Pyle, director of Waywords and Meansigns, an international project dedicated to setting Finnegans Wake to music.
